Product Description

This is a sea green sample from Idaho. Phyllite is produced when sedimentary rock is heated and squished to form a harder, more durable rock. The minerals making up the original rock melt and recrystallize to form new minerals. Some of the first minerals to appear are members of the mica group, which are shiny, flat, flaky minerals. This gives the rock a texture, or fabric, that is dominated by the millions of parallel mica flakes. Mica splits easily along its flat surfaces. As a consequence, the whole rock splits parallel to the mica grains, producing a flat rock with a glossy surface.
