Sodium bicarbonate powder is mixed into solution with red food coloring and liquid detergent. That mixture is added to a mixture of aluminum sulfate powder and yellow food coloring. The two mixtures, and acid and a base, react very quickly when poured together to produce a large volume of carbon dioxide gas which is trapped as bubbles in the liquid detergent.
