Packing peanuts are the focus of this lab activity. Water and acetone are used to dissolve styrofoam and cornstarch peanuts to illustrate the ideas of solubility, solvents, and physical changes. The initial reaction is acetone on styrofoam. The cup is placed in a metal tart pan and the acetone is added to the cup, which begins to dissolve immediately. Surprising, entertaining and a great segue into the topic.
